What works

• The whole daily can be played from the keyboard, including placing a guess: arrow keys pan the map, plus and minus zoom, and Enter or Space drops the pin at the crosshair.
• Reduced motion is honoured. If your system asks for reduced motion, britmap turns off its animations — both the CSS ones and the scripted count-up on the score.
• Sound never starts on its own. It waits for you to interact with the page, and the mute setting is remembered between visits.
• Body text meets the AA contrast ratio against the paper background.
• The settings panel behaves as a proper dialog: opening it moves focus inside, Tab stays within it, Escape closes it, and closing it returns focus to the button that opened it.
• Key changes of state are announced to a screen reader — your round score, your daily total, and confirmation that the share card was copied.
• The controls you play with — the map, the buttons, the settings button — meet the minimum target size, and everything focusable shows a visible outline when focused.
• The game and summary screens have a landmark and heading structure, so a screen reader can navigate them by region and heading.

Known limitations

• The game is inherently visual: it asks you to recognise a place on a map and point at it. No adjustment fully resolves that, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
• The row of site links in the footer and in the settings panel is set in small type, under the 24 pixel minimum target size. It relies on those links being spaced far enough apart to make up for that, and on a narrow screen — around 320 pixels wide, or any phone with text enlarged to 200% — the row wraps and the lines sit too close together for that to hold. The controls you play with are not affected.

The first of these we cannot design away. The second we can, and mean to. This page was reviewed again at public launch, and it is updated in the same change as anything above that regresses.
